UK-based geophysical services firm Metatek Group has begun the second phase of a large-scale airborne survey across Nigeria under a new three-year contract, adding 210,000 square kilometres to the 175,000 square kilometres it has already covered since the programme launched in 2022.
Once complete, Metatek will have surveyed roughly 385,000 square kilometres — about 42 percent of Nigeria’s total land area — in partnership with Nigerian company Broadlink and the country’s national energy industry. The airborne survey combines enhanced Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry with scalar gravity, magnetic and LiDAR data to build high-resolution geological pictures extending several kilometres below the surface.
Data from the programme’s first phase already helped identify prospects that were later confirmed through 2D seismic and contributed to a successful exploration well, according to the company. “This programme will provide high-resolution data rapidly across large-scale areas, enabling more accurate geological mapping and strengthening regional exploration capabilities,” said Metatek chief executive Mark Davies, adding that the data will also support future resource development and investment decisions. While hydrocarbon exploration is the primary goal, Metatek said the high-resolution data could also serve mineral exploration and renewable energy projects.
