Senegal’s National Institute of Oil and Gas and global energy company Woodside Energy have launched a comprehensive training program for 14 oil and gas operations technicians preparing to work on Woodside’s Sangomar project. The initiative represents a significant step toward strengthening local content in Senegal’s emerging oil and gas sector.
Participants will complete the first phase of training at INPG before traveling to France for Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training, which is mandatory for all offshore personnel. Woodside will fully fund the program, enabling graduates to be directly employed by service company Modec upon completion of their training.
Papa Samba Ba, Director General of Operations Monitoring at the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines of Senegal, emphasized the importance of human capital development, stating that the skills required in oil fields and across the value chain must belong to Senegalese citizens. Interestingly, although the program was originally designed for technicians, 90 percent of the 14 selected candidates are already qualified engineers, and several have already commenced work on the Sangomar project.
