TotalEnergies has reaffirmed its commitment to significantly trimming methane emissions across its operational assets in Nigeria, with Country Chair and Managing Director Matthieu Bouyer saying the company continues to take concrete action as a responsible operator.

TotalEnergies was the first exploration and production operator in Nigeria to eliminate routine flaring across all its operated assets, achieving the milestone at the end of 2023, and has set a clear ambition to reach near-zero methane emissions by 2030. Bouyer’s remarks came as the company and NNPC Limited renewed their cooperation agreement for deployment of the Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology, extending for 24 months a partnership first launched in December 2023 to support methane detection, measurement, and reduction.

AUSEA is a drone-based technology developed by TotalEnergies in partnership with the French National Centre for Scientific Research and the University of Reims, enabling high-precision monitoring of methane and carbon dioxide emissions to help identify sources and guide mitigation. AUSEA campaigns are now deployed across all of TotalEnergies’ operated sites, with annual flights to identify and reduce methane emissions; in 2025 alone, more than 2,500 sensors were installed to enable real-time leak detection and rapid response.

“Extending our partnership with NNPC allows us to support our partner in their journey to reduce methane emissions, by leveraging a cutting-edge proven technology, improving measurement and accelerating action,” Bouyer said. “It’s an important step for Nigeria as it helps valorising Nigerian resources while lowering emissions.”
