Egypt’s Cabinet has approved the implementation of an approximately 869-megawatt wind power project to be developed by international renewable energy company Voltalia, according to a Cabinet statement issued following its weekly meeting.

The project will be developed on land allocated by the New and Renewable Energy Authority. Under the agreement, Voltalia will invest $53 million and has committed to starting commercial operations by December 2028, with the company set to proceed through all necessary procedures and implementation steps to ensure timely execution.

Voltalia has operated in Egypt since 2017 and has recently pursued major renewable energy projects in partnership with TAQA Arabia, including a memorandum of understanding to repower the ageing Zafarana wind farm with a new 3.2 gigawatt wind-solar power plant — comprising 1.1 gigawatts of wind and 2.1 gigawatts of solar capacity — expected to be first commissioned in 2028. The two companies also signed a framework agreement in July 2024 for a green hydrogen cluster at Ain Sokhna, involving a 500 megawatt electrolyser powered by 1.3 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity, with total investment of up to $3.4 billion across two phases, each producing 350,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.
