Nigeria is increasingly focusing on developing its brownfield assets as a strategy to enhance oil production. This approach can yield significant results when implemented with appropriate technological interventions, paving the way for enhanced oil recovery methods that can substantially meet the region’s refining capacity needs. Compared to greenfield projects, which require considerable investments to develop from scratch, brownfield developments offer the advantage of reduced carbon footprints, enabling operators to better meet their sustainability requirements and environmental goals.
The ideal technological interventions for such projects comprise a comprehensive package of services, including e-line, slick line, coiled tubing services, well remediation, well control, and idle well management services. Well intervention operations can encompass a diverse range of activities, from well conversion and casing run operations on wildcat wells to slot recovery, installation of emergency casing head housing slip, well workover, and drilling and completion operations, among others.
To facilitate increased brownfield development, the Nigerian administration is actively working to enhance collaboration between local communities, government entities, and the private sector. This collaborative approach aims to create a more favorable environment for investment and development in the oil and gas sector.
A recent example of such collaboration is the partnership between Nigeria-based offshore construction company Intrepid Energy Limited and the United Kingdom’s Aquaterra Energy. The two companies have joined forces to deliver a bespoke subsea well intervention equipment package for a project in Nigeria.
Seun Alonge, CEO at Intrepid Energy Limited, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating: “Working with Aquaterra Energy marks a significant step forward for our intervention operations in Nigeria. Their specialized technology enhances our ability to execute intervention programs efficiently, maximizing performance across our assets. By combining Aquaterra’s technical expertise with our deep understanding of the local operating environment, we’re confident this collaboration will enhance production outcomes and create lasting value for our operations in the region.”
