Researchers at Cardiff University say they have identified a mechanistic link between the immune system’s response to herpesviruses and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
The study, carried out by scientists at Cardiff’s School of Medicine alongside its Systems Immunity and Dementia Research Institutes, found that infection with herpesviruses — a family that includes those responsible for cold sores and mononucleosis — can accelerate cognitive decline.
Specific immune cells known as T cells appear to play a central role in this process, the researchers said, suggesting that the body’s own defences against viral infection may inadvertently contribute to the development of dementia.
The findings point to a possible new avenue for prevention and treatment, with scientists suggesting that therapies targeting the immune response to herpesviruses could eventually help reduce Alzheimer’s risk.
