South Africa’s Transnet has entered a 25-year partnership with International Container Terminal Services International (ICTSI) to operate a key terminal at Durban’s Pier 2, marking a significant step in port sector reform aimed at boosting efficiency and trade throughput.
The agreement includes substantial private investment to increase capacity from 2 million to 2.8 million TEUs annually, reduce logistics costs, and improve crane productivity, with Transient retaining majority ownership of the entity.
Officials stressed that boosting port performance will enhance South Africa’s role as a regional trade hub and strengthen supply chain reliability critical factors for economic growth and export competitiveness.
The partnership addresses longstanding inefficiencies by leveraging ICTSI’s container terminal expertise, which has been cited as pivotal in modernizing operations and attracting global shipping lines.
