Senegal has crossed a historic threshold, bringing its offshore Sangomar field into production and officially becoming an oil-producing nation for the first time.

The field is operated by Woodside Energy in partnership with national oil company Petrosen, with initial output set to ramp up gradually as the operators bring wells online in stages. The milestone caps years of exploration and development work in Senegalese waters and marks a defining moment for a country that has spent more than a decade building toward this point.

The stakes are high: oil revenue promises new government income, jobs and foreign exchange, but it also raises the familiar challenge facing new producers of avoiding the so-called “resource curse.” Analysts say strong legal and institutional safeguards — including transparent revenue management and a sovereign wealth fund — will be key to making sure the windfall translates into broad-based development rather than being squandered or captured by a few.

Senegal’s entry into oil production further cements West Africa’s growing weight in the global energy map, joining neighbours across the region in turning decades of exploration into commercial output.
