Nigeria’s state oil company, NNPC Limited, has begun work on a new 1,350-megawatt power plant near Abuja, a major step in the country’s long-running push to fix its chronic electricity shortages.

The Gwagwalada Independent Power Project is being developed with partners including the Nigerian Agip Oil Company and Seplat Energy, and will be built to serve the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas with more reliable power for homes and industry alike.

The gas-fired plant fits into Nigeria’s broader gas-to-power strategy, which aims to put the country’s abundant gas reserves to work as a cleaner, more efficient way to generate electricity. The project includes several gas turbines built for high efficiency, along with new transmission lines and substations needed to feed the power into the national grid.

Financial details and a firm completion date have yet to be released, but the start of construction signals that NNPC and its partners are moving ahead on a project expected to make a meaningful dent in Nigeria’s power deficit once it’s commissioned.
