The Deepsea Mira drilling rig has finished its contract with Shell offshore Namibia and is now moving to Walvis Bay for planned upgrades, according to rig owner Northern Ocean.

The rig completed the job on July 2 after starting work on April 4, and Shell chose not to exercise its option for a second well. Northern Ocean said the extended contract brought in about $31 million in revenue, to be recognised in the second quarter, with operating costs tracking in line with expectations.

The company said it continues to market the rig for new opportunities and is encouraged by current demand for harsh-environment drilling capacity, adding that it expects the Deepsea Mira — a semi-submersible rated for water depths up to 10,000 feet and built to Norwegian Continental Shelf standards — to be well placed to pick up further work in the second half of the year.
