WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights issued the following statement:

“Congratulations to the Angolan people on conducting the August 24th election, wherein voters recorded their preferences and were given the chance to have their voices heard. Incumbent President João Lourenço was declared the winner in the nation’s presidential contest. I encourage political leaders to refrain from anti-democratic rhetoric and for all protests to remain peaceful regardless of political party affiliation or the outcome of any election-related court rulings. A second term for President Lourenço is an opportunity to continue to improve relations with the United States, especially as it pertains to growing American trade and public-private investment in Angola.”
