Cyril Ramaphosa is set to face the indignity of being the first-ever ANC leader that fails to secure over 50% of the national vote, in either a local or general election. The latest results pouring in from all corners of South Africa suggest that the general public is starting to turn its back on the party – and the president is now under siege.

WHO IS CALLING FOR CYRIL RAMAPHOSA TO RESIGN?

The 68-year-old hasn’t been in the country for most of the week, and has chosen this time to attend diplomatic commitments abroad. But the crisis at this year’s Local Elections hasn’t influenced him to come home early.

Some see this move as an abandonment of his responsibilities, and criticism is now coming from both sides of the Parliamentary benches. Douglas Gibson, a former Chief Whip for the DA, has said that Cyril should consider taking a leaf out of Mmusi Maimane’s book, after he left the party due to disappointing election results in 2019:

“Cyril Ramaphosa has presided over a major setback for the ANC. Will he accept responsibility? The ANC had a disastrous election, not only in KZN but everywhere. Does this mean President Ramaphosa will accept responsibility and resign, as Mmusi Maimane did after the DA’s poor showing in 2019?”

POOR ELECTION RESULTS BRING OUT CYRIL’S CRITICS

With Cyril Ramaphosa in a tight spot, it really was only a matter of time before RET advocate Carl Niehaus got involved. The controversial ANC member – who is a staunch supporter of Jacob Zuma, and a fierce critic of President Ramaphosa – says that the current leadership ‘must fall on their swords’.

“THIS IS THE TIPPING POINT: It is too painful! The leadership, who lead us in this disastrous election over the precipice into the valley of darkness, must take responsibility and fall onto their swords. I’m aghast as the worst ANC electoral performance unfolds. There MUST be consequences for those who brought us here. Now the branches must act!”

Social media sensation Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla also used her platform to call for Ramaphosa’s resignation. The daughter of Jacob Zuma believes the ANC must act fast to replace the serving head of state.

“The ANC NEC must apply Rule 29 and call for Special Conference. Next year is too far…he will do more damage in that seat within the next year…HE MUST GO NOW! These election results are the final nail in the coffin for the ANC, if they don’t immediately recall Cyril Ramaphosa.”
