GAME-CHANGER: Tanzania Launches $100 Million LPG Terminal Project Set to Slash Gas Prices by 40%
Tanzania’s energy landscape is poised for transformation following the official launch of a $100 million Liquefied Petroleum Gas terminal project that promises to reduce LPG prices by up to 40%. The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Doto Biteko on Thursday, marking the beginning of what could be East Africa’s most significant clean energy infrastructure development.
The Tanga International Energy Terminal, a partnership between local firm Asas Limited and UK-based Petredec, will be constructed in Chongoleani, Mkinga District, with completion targeted for December 2027. The facility will feature six mounded storage spheres with a 40,000 cubic meter capacity in its first phase, along with eight truck loading gantries and a 2.8-kilometer underwater pipeline.
“This project supports our vision of ensuring 80% of Tanzanians have access to clean energy by 2034,” stated Deputy Prime Minister Biteko, emphasizing the government’s commitment to creating an enabling investment environment. The terminal is expected to create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs while establishing Tanzania as a clean energy hub for East Africa.
The project strategically positions Tanzania to serve neighboring landlocked countries including Zambia, potentially reshaping regional energy dynamics and reducing East Africa’s reliance on distant markets like Russia.
