introduces VAR ahead of Super Eagles

vs Gabon National Football Team playoff

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be deployed for the first time in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs.

This development is especially significant as the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, prepare for their decisive four-team playoff tournament involving Gabon, DR Congo and Cameroon.

CAF’s decision comes after mounting pressure to align African qualifiers with global standards and to reduce controversial refereeing decisions which have affected key matches in past qualification cycles.

For Nigeria, this means greater scrutiny on tackles, off-sides and hand-ball incidents and potentially fewer contentious moments where official decisions may have previously swung the momentum.

As the playoffs approach, both sides and refereeing teams will need to adapt to the extra layer of oversight VAR brings, which could be the difference between success and heartbreak in the quest for a World Cup ticket.
