Central Africa Unites for Regional Pipeline System to Combat Energy Shortages
The Central African Economic and Monetary Community, African Petroleum Producers’ Organization, and Central Africa Business & Energy Forum have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding to develop the Central African Pipeline System aimed at ending pervasive regional energy shortages.
The MoU establishes framework for a comprehensive feasibility study involving up to 11 countries including Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda, and Sao Tomé & Príncipe. CAPS envisions an integrated network comprising thousands of kilometers of oil, gas, and LPG pipelines alongside supporting infrastructure including pumping stations, storage terminals, refineries, and gas-fired power plants.
APPO Secretary-General Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim described the initiative as “transformative,” noting it will “enhance energy access, reduce dependence on fuel imports, and lay the foundation for industrial development across Central Africa.” The ambitious project represents unprecedented regional cooperation in addressing energy security challenges across the continent.
