Renewable energy company AMEA Power has commissioned the landmark 120 MW Kairouan solar PV power plant in Tunisia, marking the country’s largest operational solar project. The facility represents Tunisia’s first renewable energy project above 100 MW and the first developed under the concessions regime to connect directly to the country’s parastatal STEG’s 225 kV high-voltage transmission network.
AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais stated that the achievement reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to supporting Tunisia’s long-term renewable energy development and contributing to a more sustainable future for generations to come.
The plant is expected to generate around 22 GWh of clean electricity annually, supplying power to approximately 43,000 households and avoiding an estimated 117,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. The project supports Tunisia’s national objective of achieving 35 percent renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Financing for the groundbreaking project was provided by the African Development Bank and the International Finance Corporation, demonstrating strong institutional confidence in Tunisia’s renewable energy sector.
