PowerChina and Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have formalized a landmark partnership aimed at expanding renewable energy access across rural communities.

The collaboration is expected to accelerate deployment of off-grid and mini-grid solar solutions to improve electricity supply in underserved and remote areas. Officials say the initiative could directly benefit millions of households and SMEs.

During a signing ceremony in Abuja, REA leadership highlighted the importance of working with global engineering leaders to position Nigeria as Africa’s renewable energy powerhouse. PowerChina expressed readiness to commit financial resources, technology transfer, and manpower expertise to the effort. Both parties emphasized their shared vision of accelerating Nigeria’s transition to clean energy.

Under the agreement, PowerChina will support construction of mini-grid systems, smart energy storage facilities, and solar home solutions. The initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader Energy Transition Plan, which seeks to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030 while reducing reliance on diesel generators and fossil-based power sources.

REA’s Executive Director stated that the collaboration could stimulate rural entrepreneurship by powering schools, hospitals, farms, and small businesses. “Energy is the backbone of development. With this partnership, we are not only lighting homes; we are powering economic transformation and job creation,” he noted.

Analysts say the partnership strengthens Nigeria’s renewable energy ecosystem and aligns with global climate goals. The program is expected to attract additional foreign investment, deepen local manufacturing capacity for solar components, and support government plans to integrate renewable systems into the national power grid.
