Off-grid solar company Sun King plans to invest up to $50 million in Madagascar over the next five years, targeting affordable electricity access for underserved households and aiming to deliver 1.5 million new electricity connections by 2030.
The expansion builds on Sun King’s pay-as-you-go model, which lets customers access solar home systems through affordable instalment payments rather than a large upfront cost, addressing one of the main barriers to solar adoption in low-income and rural communities beyond the reach of Madagascar’s grid infrastructure.
Sun King says it has deployed more than 30 million solar products globally across 13 countries, using a network of local agents for sales, installation and service. The Madagascar investment follows a $40 million raise from Lightrock in December 2025 to support the company’s expansion across Africa and Asia, and comes as Sun King increasingly uses securitisation of customer receivables to attract institutional capital to Africa’s off-grid solar sector.
