A partnership forged during President Hakainde Hichilema’s 2023 state visit to Saudi Arabia is now delivering tangible benefits to ordinary Zambians. Through the Saudi government’s Empowering Africa Initiative, implemented in collaboration with Afrox and Linde Middle East, Zambia has launched its first Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Micro-Filling Station in Lusaka, alongside a donation of 200 LPG cylinders and stoves to vulnerable households in Kanyama Compound.
Minister of Community Development and Social Services Doreen Mwamba, representing the Green Economy and Environment Minister at the launch, described the initiative as a milestone in Zambia’s clean energy journey and a testament to the power of international cooperation in generating local solutions. She noted that the distribution of gas stoves complements the Social Cash Transfer Programme, reducing charcoal dependence while building climate resilience.
Saudi Ambassador Ali Al Kahtani reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Zambia’s clean energy goals, noting that the micro-filling station model promotes safer energy access and creates economic opportunities at the grassroots level.
The project aligns with Zambia’s national clean cooking strategy and its Eighth National Development Plan, which prioritises environmental sustainability and inclusive growth.
