A man accused of robbery with violence who was out on bond has been remanded until the case is heard and determined.
This is after he failed to appear in court for hearings for one year. A warrant of arrest was issued and he was arrested in Kisii.
George Ogage is accused of violently robbing Maurine Wanjiku Njuguna of Sh41,000 and a mobile phone make Infinix valued at Sh19,000.
The incident happened on October 22, 2018 at Roysambu area in Kasarani.
Principal Magistrate Marylene Opondo ordered that the title deed the accused gave as surety be withdrawn and returned to the owner and Ogage stand on his own.
Ogage said he did not attend court proceedings due to fear of the coronavirus and further thought the courts had closed down.
“Schools closed for nine months due to corona; the court closed down for a while but it was only scaling down. The accused knew the courts were opened but chose of his own free will to stay away from court for a duration of one year,” Opondo said.
She said the surety has demonstrated his inability to ensure he attends court is discharged from that obligation.
She directed that the accused be remanded at Industrial Area prisons until his case is finalized.
Opondo however stated that the accused has 14 days to appeal.
TheThe mention of the case will be on November 21 while the hearing will be January 21.
