Kenya’s Mini-Grid Solar Operators Tap Global Carbon Markets for Additional Revenue Through Innovative Platform
Kenya’s mini-grid solar operators are discovering new revenue streams through the sale of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), facilitated by the Africa Renewables Katalyst (ARK) platform. This innovative approach connects off-grid solar operators with international buyers seeking verified renewable energy certificates to meet their emissions reduction targets.
The platform addresses a critical challenge faced by mini-grid operators who often struggle with low income from electricity tariffs. By registering and verifying solar assets on international renewable energy registries, operators receive certificates for each megawatt-hour generated, which ARK helps market to global buyers.
In Kisumu County, one mini-grid operator reported significant improvements in financial stability after joining the ARK platform, using proceeds to upgrade infrastructure, expand staffing, and maintain affordable electricity tariffs for local communities. The success has attracted attention from operators seeking to supplement their primary revenue streams.
ARK’s expansion plans include supporting similar mini-grid projects in Tanzania and Uganda, aligning with regional efforts to promote renewable energy adoption. The platform also supports Kenya’s Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, contributing to both local development and global climate goals by providing small-scale renewable energy producers with access to international carbon markets.
