Angola’s Etu Energias Launches Ambitious Drilling Program at Block 2/05 with 80,000 BPD Target
Angolan private energy company Etu Energias has initiated drilling operations at Block 2/05 in the shallow waters of Zaire province, marking a significant milestone in the block’s redevelopment strategy. The SMS ESSA jack-up rig arrived at the project site on June 25 and began operations on June 27, launching an extensive drilling program that includes three development wells, one exploration well, and five technical interventions across existing wells.
The drilling program aligns with Etu Energias’ broader ambitions to increase oil production to 80,000 barrels per day by 2030 through strategic reinvestments in producing assets and exploration across newly-acquired blocks. Block 2/05 features 18 mature fields situated in the Lower Congo basin, offering substantial potential for increased production.
“The arrival and entry into operation of the SMS probe represents a strategic investment to increase national crude oil production,” stated Edson Dos Santos, CEO of Etu Energias. “This milestone reaffirms the growing technical and financial capacity of Etu Energias and its partners.”
The SMS ESSA rig is specifically designed for the project’s requirements, operating in water depths of 30 meters. The development is being pursued through a consortium led by Etu Energias, with partners including Poliedro, Kotoil, Falcon Oil, and Prodoil. Paulino Jerónimo, Chairman of Angola’s National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency, emphasized the project’s significance in demonstrating Angolan businesspeople’s potential in the capital-intensive oil sector.
