Golar LNG Hits Major Milestone as Africa’s First Deepwater LNG Export Project Goes Live

Commercial operations officially begin for Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project, unlocking $3 billion revenue stream
Golar LNG’s FLNG Gimi has officially reached its Commercial Operations Date, marking a historic moment as Mauritania and Senegal join the global LNG export market through one of Africa’s most challenging deepwater developments. The milestone triggers the start of a lucrative 20-year lease and operate agreement that secures approximately $3 billion in adjusted EBITDA backlog for Golar’s operations.
The achievement represents a breakthrough for West African energy production, with the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project positioned offshore between Mauritania and Senegal. Golar LNG emphasized the significance of introducing both nations as new LNG exporters on the global stage.
“This milestone marks a major achievement for one of Africa’s deepest offshore developments,” the company stated, expressing commitment to continued collaboration with project operator bp and partners Kosmos, PETROSEN, and SMH, alongside Mauritanian and Senegalese authorities.
With this success and recent FLNG charter announcements in Argentina, Golar is now fast-tracking development of additional floating LNG units. The company is advancing commercial discussions for its fourth FLNG unit, considering multiple capacity options including a 3.5 MMtpa MKII design, a 5 MMtpa MKIII unit, and an up to 2.7 MMtpa MKI configuration.
