The European Union (EU) has awarded €1.5 million in funding to the Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CEO) in Oyo, Republic of Congo. This grant forms part of a broader €6 million EU investment aimed at strengthening the region’s energy sector through sustainable initiatives.

The CEO’s primary objective is to advance research and development in renewable energy and energy efficiency across the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). The center also seeks to establish regulatory frameworks that ensure a stable clean energy market while promoting innovative energy technologies.

Currently, the CEO is mentoring nine emerging researchers under the guidance of two experts assigned by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The center is engaged in a five-year initiative that focuses on bolstering national energy institutions, delivering specialized training programs, and financing renewable energy projects in rural communities. The program has already yielded promising results, including the successful development of a biogas digester, underscoring the potential for sustainable energy solutions in the region.
