Responding to a long-standing request from the International Monetary Fund, the Lusophone oil giant is taking a very gradual approach to fuel exemptions to limit social unrest.

Angola is one step closer to ending fuel subsidies. Elected in 2017 as “the man of the Angolan economic miracle”, President João Lourenço issued a 7 March decree to bring an end to exemptions granted to certain professions allowing them to benefit from petrol at a subsidised price.

On 30 April, these exemptions, granted in particular to small farms, small-scale fishermen, taxis and motor taxis, will stop – marking the end of petrol subsidies in the country.
