Egyptian engineering company Orascom Construction and Spanish contractor Técnicas Reunidas have been awarded a substantial $2.6 billion contract to build a 3 GW combined-cycle natural gas-fired power plant in Saudi Arabia. The project involves the expansion of the existing Qurayyah IPP Power Project located in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
The expansion will include the addition of a 380-kilovolt substation and infrastructure specifically designed to support carbon capture technologies, highlighting a commitment to more environmentally conscious energy production. The contract was awarded by Hajr Two Electricity Company, a consortium comprising several major energy players: Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, Saudi Electricity Company, and Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co.
This project represents a significant international collaboration in the Middle Eastern energy sector and demonstrates Egypt’s growing role in regional infrastructure development.
