Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi held a video conference with Basil Allam, Country Manager of Chevron Cyprus, to advance the technical and commercial steps needed to connect Cyprus’s Aphrodite offshore gas field to Egyptian liquefaction infrastructure for re-export to international markets.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed progress on drafting the main project agreements and agreed to intensify working sessions in the coming weeks to finalise the necessary documentation as quickly as possible. Badawi stressed the project’s strategic importance in cementing Egypt’s role as a regional gas trading and distribution hub and maximising the utilisation of its existing infrastructure.
The discussions build on a roadmap agreed during earlier meetings in Washington in February between Badawi and senior Chevron executives. Chevron has already conducted seabed survey operations as part of preparations for constructing the subsea pipeline linking the Aphrodite field to Egypt.
The Aphrodite field was discovered in 2011 in Block 12 of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone and is operated by Chevron in partnership with Shell and NewMed Energy.
