The Edo state Police Command has dismissed speculations that Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) was being detained in its custody over alleged forgery and conspiracy.
The police, however, noted that the REC was invited following a petition by the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi.
According to the Command, “The REC invitation was not as a suspect as being falsely projected in the media, but as an expert source to meet with the police leadership towards aiding us in addressing the technical issues in the investigative process.”
This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP. Jennifer Iwegbu.
The statement read in part, “It must be clarified further that such administrative interactions between the leaderships of the Nigeria Police and INEC in Edo state is routine and not new.”
