Eni’s Baleine oil field offshore Cote d’Ivoire has topped 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, underscoring how quickly the discovery has grown into a cornerstone of West Africa’s energy landscape.

Discovered in September 2021 in blocks CI-101 and CI-802, Baleine went from discovery to first production in under two years — among the fastest timelines on record for a deep-water find anywhere in the region. Current output includes more than 45,000 barrels of oil a day alongside roughly 75 million cubic feet of associated gas.

Nearly all of that gas is put to use, with a large share piped onshore to fuel domestic power plants — cutting Cote d’Ivoire’s need for imported fuel and supporting the country’s industrial ambitions. Eni holds an 80 percent stake in the project, with state oil company Petroci holding the remainder.

The rapid ramp-up has fuelled interest from international energy companies eyeing further exploration in Cote d’Ivoire’s offshore basins, with this milestone seen as one more step toward unlocking the field’s full potential and shoring up the country’s long-term energy security.
