An elderly couple was killed last night after a suspected suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED in Awach sub-location, Katito, Kisumu County.
The suspect, identified as John Odhiambo, died on the spot alongside the couple. One other victim, the daughter of the couple, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
According to Nyakach OCPD Daniel Chacha, Odhiambo detonated the IED at around 10pm.
“The suspect went to the home of the couple, engaged them in conversation, then detonated the device,” said Chacha.
The relationship between Odhiambo and the couple, who lived about 30 meters apart, is still unclear.
The OCPD said that the suspect had been on the radar of the police in connection with an explosion that occurred in Katito last year.
The suspect is alleged to have tried to kill his girlfriend by detonating an explosive device on December 20, 2020.
Police say he disappeared after the incident and only resurfaced yesternight, blowing up another IED.
