Libya’s state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) has announced a significant technological breakthrough in the country’s oil sector, confirming that Libyan technical teams at Sirte Oil Company for Production and Manufacturing of Oil and Gas have successfully drilled the first horizontal well in the Al-Lahib-Dur Murada field (T27-13).

The well achieved an initial production rate of 1,870 barrels per day — a figure the NOC described as exceeding expectations — with a wellhead flow pressure of 1,475 psi. The well produces stable, dry light oil with a density of 61 degrees API, indicating high-quality crude.

The operation involved drilling a 350-foot horizontal section within the reservoir using advanced directional drilling techniques, maximising contact with producing layers and achieving optimal reservoir energy utilisation. The NOC said the results represent a significant technological shift in the development of the Al-Waha-Bahi/Gargaf reservoir and enhance prospects for increasing the field’s overall recovery factor.

Beyond the technical achievement, the NOC highlighted the milestone as a reflection of growing Libyan expertise in the oil sector. The success, it said, demonstrates the ability of Libyan personnel to master advanced technologies and achieve professional independence — a signal that the country’s human capital is keeping pace with the demands of modern petroleum engineering.
