Genesis Energy, a pan-African clean energy infrastructure company, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to supply surplus electricity generated from the Port Harcourt Refining Company directly to Nigeria’s national grid, marking a watershed moment in the country’s power sector transformation.
The collaboration was unveiled during an official visit by Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, to Genesis Energy’s operational facility within the Port Harcourt Refinery complex in Eleme, Rivers State. Aligned with the Federal Government’s Power Sector Reform and Energy Transition Agenda, the partnership aims to optimize Nigeria’s domestic generation capacity, strengthen grid stability, and expand electricity access nationwide.
Minister Adelabu praised Genesis Energy’s operational excellence and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an investment-friendly environment for private sector participation in the power industry. He emphasized that government funding alone cannot meet the sector’s massive infrastructure needs, making partnerships like this essential for delivering reliable electricity to industries, businesses, and households. The minister stated that comprehensive policies and consistent regulatory frameworks have been established to ensure private investors can operate confidently, recover investments, and contribute meaningfully to national economic growth.
The collaboration will serve as a proof of concept for integrating excess capacity into the national grid, with potential for an additional 120 megawatt expansion following successful completion of the pilot phase. The Federal Government has committed to fast-tracking transmission infrastructure and commercial arrangements to enable seamless power transfer from the facility.
The 84-megawatt off-grid independent power plant operated by Genesis Energy within the Port Harcourt Refining Company stands as Nigeria’s largest licensed private off-grid clean power facility. Powered by three GE TM2500+ gas turbines, the plant supplies uninterrupted, sustainable electricity directly to the refinery, improving operational efficiency, strengthening local energy security, and reducing dependence on diesel and grid instability.
