Uganda’s Tilenga project has reached 74% completion, including 234 wells drilled, while the neighbouring Kingfisher project stands at 79% complete, with both on track to deliver Uganda’s first commercial oil production by September 2026.
Tilenga, operated by TotalEnergies, has already exceeded the minimum 170-well threshold needed to begin production and is designed to produce up to 190,000 barrels per day at peak from six fields in the Buliisa and Nwoya districts, requiring 420 wells in total. Kingfisher, operated by CNOOC Uganda with a 28.33% stake alongside TotalEnergies at 56.67% and the Uganda National Oil Company at 15%, is nearing completion of its central processing facility and feeder pipeline, targeting 40,000 barrels per day. Combined peak production from both fields is projected at 230,000 barrels per day.
TotalEnergies is now targeting first oil from the Lake Albert basin by end-September 2026, a revised timetable after the original July deadline was missed. The 1,443-kilometre East African Crude Oil Pipeline connecting the fields to Tanzania’s Tanga port stands at 90% completion, with more than 1,443 kilometres of pipe welded across both countries and four 500,000-barrel storage tanks at the Tanga export terminal in final construction stages. Separately, technical studies for the proposed Uganda Refinery Project had reached 28% completion as of end-June.
