TotalEnergies is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Lewis Energy, a prominent South African renewable energy developer, in a move that would significantly expand the French major’s renewables footprint across the continent. The acquisition, if finalised, would hand TotalEnergies a substantial portfolio of operational and development-stage wind and solar projects spread across South Africa.
Lewis Energy has built a reputation developing utility-scale renewable assets, with a pipeline of projects either under construction or progressing through permitting and financial close. The company has secured several successful bids under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, contributing to the country’s push to diversify away from coal-fired generation.
Sources familiar with the negotiations value the deal at approximately ZAR 3.5 billion, or roughly $190 million, though final terms remain subject to change and regulatory clearance. The acquisition would give TotalEnergies a strong local development team and operational expertise in a market the company sees as a priority destination for renewable investment, as part of its broader global ambition to reach 100 gigawatts of gross renewable generation capacity by 2030. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, pending due diligence and government approvals.
