Seplat Energy Doubles Production in Historic Oil Block Expansion
Nigerian energy giant Seplat Energy has achieved a remarkable milestone, more than doubling its daily oil production from 50,000 to over 120,000 barrels following the successful activation of 11 oil blocks across the country.
In an exclusive interview with Forbes Africa, CEO Roger Brown revealed that the company’s landmark acquisition of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU) assets has fundamentally transformed Seplat’s operational capacity and positioned it as a dominant force in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
“We are absolutely delighted to have completed the MPNU acquisition. It’s a true game-changer for Seplat Energy. The scale of this transaction is simply monumental,” Brown declared, emphasizing the transformative nature of the deal.
The acquisition has expanded Seplat’s operational footprint to encompass seven onshore blocks and four shallow-water offshore blocks, with direct operational control over eight of these assets. Through the newly formed Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited (SEPNU), the company now manages a fully integrated value chain that connects seamlessly to three terminals—one offshore and two onshore.
Brown highlighted the extraordinary gas resources contained within Seplat’s offshore blocks, estimating actual volumes to be three times what is currently reported as proven reserves. This gas will be instrumental in feeding domestic power generation, industrial applications including fertilizer and petrochemicals production, and both Nigerian LNG and new floating LNG initiatives.
The company’s workforce has grown to approximately 1,500 professionals, with the vast majority being Nigerian nationals, reflecting Seplat’s commitment to local talent development and economic empowerment.
Looking ahead, Seplat plans to have three operational gas processing plants onshore by year-end, strategically positioned to serve high-demand areas including Lagos and Abuja. Combined with offshore acquisitions, the company will soon process one billion cubic feet of gas daily, significantly lowering electricity costs and reducing dependence on expensive diesel generators.
The company is also pioneering technological innovation, deploying artificial intelligence to monitor aging infrastructure integrity and implementing predictive maintenance protocols. Seplat has committed to ending routine flaring in onshore operations this year, several years ahead of Nigeria’s national target of 2030.
