Global energy company Puma Energy has reaffirmed a major investment commitment to Mozambique, with plans centred on compressed natural gas development, carbon and sustainability-linked projects, and an expansion of fuel distribution networks into underserved rural communities across the country.
The commitments were outlined by Puma Energy Chief Executive Officer Mark Russell during a meeting with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo in Maputo, where the two sides held discussions on the country’s energy development priorities and the role of private investment in advancing the energy transition.
“It was an honour to meet the President again. We had a very productive discussion about the opportunities and challenges currently facing the energy sector,” Russell said, adding that Puma Energy’s strategic objectives align closely with Mozambique’s national priorities in advancing the energy transition and addressing climate change.
Russell said compressed natural gas and carbon-related projects represent key pillars of Puma Energy’s global sustainability strategy, and that Mozambique’s growing potential in both areas makes it a priority market for the company. He also highlighted the company’s plans to expand its network of fuel service stations into rural and underserved areas, which he said was a proposal warmly received during the presidential meeting.
“We are absolutely committed to developing our business in Mozambique, including assessing rural areas for new fuel stations,” Russell said. “We remain extremely committed to our operations in Mozambique and are looking to further expand our presence.” He described the engagement with President Chapo as constructive and forward-looking, and said it represents an important step in deepening the partnership between Puma Energy and the Mozambican government.
