A major gas pipeline in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region has been damaged in what officials describe as “criminal damage and economic sabotage.” The Ogboinbiri/Obiobi 24-inch gas pipeline, located between Angiama and Angiamagbene communities in Bayelsa state’s Southern Ijaw local government area, is the latest target in a series of infrastructure attacks.
“The damage to public assets not only results in revenue loss to federal, state, and local governments but also poses grave environmental dangers,” said Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, Bayelsa Commissioner of Information and Orientation, in a statement on Friday.
This incident follows several recent pipeline damages in the region, including a fire on the Trans-Niger Pipeline in Rivers state on March 17 and an explosion at the Soku gas pipeline along the export terminal route five days later.
