Nigeria has announced plans to construct a groundbreaking 1-gigawatt floating solar power plant, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to accelerate renewable energy adoption and reduce power shortages.
The floating infrastructure will be deployed across large water bodies, optimizing unused surface area while minimizing land-use impact. The project will be one of the world’s largest floating solar installations upon completion.
Government officials stated that the initiative aims to diversify Nigeria’s energy mix, enhance grid stability, and meet growing electricity demand. The plant will deliver clean power to both residential and industrial consumers while cutting reliance on expensive fossil-based generation. The project aligns with the Energy Transition Plan and Nigeria’s climate-resilient energy development strategy.
The floating solar facility will incorporate advanced energy storage systems, enabling seamless integration into the national grid. Foreign energy partners and development institutions are expected to co-fund the project, with technology sourced from leading global renewable firms specializing in hydropower-solar hybrid systems.
Experts say floating solar offers climate and environmental benefits by reducing evaporation from water reservoirs and improving panel efficiency due to cooling effects. It also avoids land competition with agricultural and urban development needs, making it ideal for densely populated regions.
Once operational, the project could serve as a model for other African nations exploring innovative renewable solutions. It is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while contributing significantly to Nigeria’s ambitions of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.
