The Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has issued licenses for three new refineries in Edo, Delta, and Abia States, increasing the country’s refining capacity by 140,000 bpd.
The newly licensed refineries include:
- Eghudu Refinery Ltd. in Edo State – 100,000 bpd capacity.
- MB Refinery and Petrochemicals Company Ltd. in Delta State – 30,000 bpd capacity.
- HIS Refining and Petrochemical Company Ltd. in Abia State – 10,000 bpd capacity.
“These licenses, which would add 140,000 barrels per day to Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity, were presented to the MDs of the companies,” the NMDPRA stated in an official announcement.
According to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nigeria currently has nine operational refineries, including the Dangote Refinery, Warri Refinery, Kaduna Refinery, and Port Harcourt Refinery, among others. These facilities have a combined refining capacity of 974,500 bpd, with the Dangote Refinery contributing 650,000 bpd.
Despite the growing number of refineries, many operate below capacity. Reports indicate that local refiners struggle to secure crude oil despite government assurances.
