Nigeria Accelerates Gas Production Drive to Meet Ambitious 12 BSCF Daily Target by 2030

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo is orchestrating strategic partnerships with key gas-producing companies to dramatically scale Nigeria’s daily gas production capacity from current levels of 7.3 billion standard cubic feet to 12 billion by 2030.

The minister is advocating for production increases of one billion standard cubic feet annually between 2025 and 2030 to achieve national gas production aspirations while eliminating routine gas flaring practices. Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Abuja, Ekpo emphasized the need for accelerated sector growth to position Nigeria among the world’s top 10 natural gas-consuming nations.

Recent divestments by major oil companies present pivotal opportunities for Nigeria’s energy sector, creating openings to aggressively exploit both Associated Gas and Non-Associated Gas resources. Ekpo stressed that capitalizing on these divestments requires clear strategies to accelerate project timelines, modernize existing facilities, and deploy innovative extraction and processing technologies.

The minister highlighted the critical importance of strengthening international collaboration and technical expertise to ensure successful execution of major gas infrastructure projects, including the AKK and OB-3 pipelines, which are essential for connecting gas resources to domestic and industrial markets.

Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission Chief Executive Gbenga Komolafe assured investors of a conducive environment supporting government targets, while NNPC Ltd. Executive Vice President Olalekan Ogunleye confirmed that the AKK and OB-3 pipeline projects have advanced to 78% and 97% completion stages respectively.
