Mauritania Advances Energy Security with Landmark Gas-to-Power Agreements

Mauritania has taken a significant step toward enhancing its energy security by signing Heads of Terms for two Power Purchase Agreements with the TAQA Arabia-GoGas Consortium, marking the next phase of the ambitious Banda gas-to-power project.

The agreements involve Mauritania’s national mining company Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM) and electricity utility Société Mauritanienne de l’Électricité (SOMELEC), with first gas and incremental power generation expected by late 2028.

Under the terms, the consortium will replace heavy fuel oil with natural gas from the Banda field to generate more than 150 MW of electricity. TAQA Arabia, through its subsidiary Rosetta, will lead downstream gas distribution in the form of mobile LNG to support industrial and mining sectors.

“Signing these PPAs marks a significant step toward enhancing Mauritania’s energy security and economic growth,” stated Khaled Kacem, CEO of GoGas Upstream. “As the first integrated gas-to-power project in the country, Banda exemplifies our commitment to driving Africa’s energy transition.”

The agreements secure the offtake of at least 60 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas from the Banda field, supporting the development of a planned 300 MW combined cycle plant.
