A North West man wanted for allegedly raping a disabled woman was arrested after handing himself over to the police.

Otsile Juell Boinamo, 31, allegedly raped the 30-year-old woman on Friday last week after offering to take her home.

North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said allegations were that the wheelchair-bound woman, from Bodibe village near Itsoseng, was visiting friends and had later gone to a tavern.

The woman was about leave the tavern around 19:00, when Boinamo volunteered to take her home. However, on their way, the accused instead took her to his home in Zone 1, where he allegedly raped her, said Myburgh.

“The victim managed on Saturday to escape by crawling out of the house into the street, where she was assisted by a passer-by who contacted the police. As a result, a case of rape was opened for investigation.”

Myburgh said Boinamo had handed himself over to the police on Monday, whereupon he was arrested and charged with rape. He appeared in the Itsoseng Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He is expected to appear in court again on 4 November for a bail application.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena condemned the incident, which he described as “appalling”.

Kwena also encouraged women to avoid being accompanied by strangers and rather move in groups of well-known friends, especially at night.
