The Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Italian energy major Eni have held high-level discussions on strengthening cooperation across several gas projects and strategic initiatives in Libya’s energy sector, according to NOC Chairman Massoud Suleiman.
Suleiman met with Alessandro Tiani, Eni’s General Manager for North Africa, to examine prospects for deepening joint cooperation in gas projects, including development opportunities for projects currently under construction and ways to accelerate their entry into production. Mechanisms to increase production from existing fields and support NOC’s project implementation plans were also discussed.
A key item on the agenda was the project to exploit gas currently lost through flaring in the Bouri offshore field, as well as development activities for the so-called ‘A&E’ facilities — described as the largest energy investment in Libya over the past two decades. According to agency reports, the overall plan is linked to investments estimated at around $10 billion, aiming to increase gas availability for the Libyan domestic market and, in the medium term, for exports to Italy through the GreenStream gas pipeline.
Eni’s broader plan in Libya focuses on three areas: maintaining offshore production through the Sabratha Compression project in the Bahr Essalam field; recovering associated gas currently dispersed or flared through the Bouri Gas Utilisation Project; and developing new offshore fields connected to the A&E facilities. In recent years, Eni has strengthened its presence in the North African country, focusing particularly on upgrading facilities at Bahr Essalam and Mellitah, considered strategic for both Italian and Mediterranean energy security.
NOC Chairman Suleiman emphasised the importance of continuing coordination and partnership with Eni in line with implementing energy projects according to the highest technical and operational standards.
