The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commissioned the country’s first modular Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) extraction plant alongside a 20-megawatt gas-to-power project.
The projects were inaugurated by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, at the Otakikpo field in Rivers State. According to the minister’s post on his official X account, the projects were developed by Green Energy and Lekoil Joint Venture (JV), marking a significant advancement in Nigeria’s gas sector.
These newly launched projects aim to boost the country’s domestic gas utilization, improve energy accessibility, and drive economic growth within the region.
Ahead of the official commissioning, the JV management took the minister on a tour of key facilities, including the power plant, LPG extraction plant, Early Production Facility (EPF), and a land terminal, which is the first of its kind built by an independent company in Nigeria.
Commending the JV for its efficiency, Ekpo emphasized the strategic use of local resources and the importance of community collaboration. He also acknowledged the harmonious relationship between host communities, traditional rulers, and operating companies, which facilitated the timely completion of the projects.
“These projects will generate opportunities for a robust gas economy, provide electricity to communities, create jobs for youths, and offer other benefits aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Ekpo stated.
The commissioning ceremony witnessed the presence of top government officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ambassador Nicholas Agbo Ella. They were welcomed by the JV’s leadership, including Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe, Chairman of Green Energy International, and Mr. Olalekan Akinyanmi, Chief Executive Officer of Lekoil.
Additionally, the Federal Government reiterated its commitment to increasing citizens’ access to clean cooking fuel, raising the annual growth trajectory from 22% to 25%.
