Egyptian authorities are accelerating infrastructure upgrades at the Zohr field — the largest gas discovery in the Mediterranean Sea — as operator Petrobel and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) push to expand production capacity and modernise the field’s processing systems.
A high-level meeting between EGAS Executive Managing Director Sayed Selim and Petrobel Chairman Tharwat El Gendy reviewed the current status of offshore pipeline upgrades and outlined plans to improve gas treatment through a Floating Processing Unit (FPU) project.
Petrobel recently completed drilling the Zohr-9 and Zohr-13 wells, which are expected to add a combined 125 to 150 million cubic feet per day to Egypt’s national grid. Both executives underscored the urgency of accelerating technically and economically viable projects at the field, with EGAS committing to provide full technical support and expedite the supply of required resources.
The Zohr field is developed by Italy’s Eni alongside partners Rosneft, BP, and Mubadala Energy, with Petrobel — a joint venture between Eni and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation — acting as operator on behalf of the consortium.
