Enterpreneur Of The Week
Dr. Patrice Motsepe is one of Africa’s most inspiring business figures, known not only for his sharp entrepreneurial instincts but also for his dedication to giving back.
As the founder and Executive Chairman of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), Motsepe built a billion-dollar empire in mining—spanning gold, platinum, ferrous metals, and coal—emerging as the first Black African to make Forbes’ billionaire list in 2008. His success is deeply rooted in South Africa’s post-apartheid economic transformation, especially the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) initiatives that enabled historically disadvantaged citizens to participate in the mainstream economy.
His leadership extends beyond mining. Through Ubuntu-Botho Investments and African Rainbow Capital, he holds major interests in financial services, insurance, and energy. As Deputy Chairman of Sanlam, one of South Africa’s largest financial groups, and founder of African Rainbow Energy and Power, Motsepe continues to influence strategic industries on the continent.
In the sports world, he is the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns FC, a top football club in Africa, and currently serves as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Since his election in 2021 (and re-election in 2025), Motsepe has pushed reforms to develop grassroots football and attract global investment into African sport.
Motsepe is also a trailblazer in philanthropy. In 2013, he became the first African to sign the Giving Pledge, committing to donate half of his wealth to improve lives across the continent. Through the Motsepe Foundation, he funds education, health, youth empowerment, and rural development initiatives.
Dr. Motsepe’s journey is proof that visionary leadership, combined with purpose and perseverance, can uplift not only industries—but entire communities.
