Africa’s most ambitious industrialist, Aliko Dangote, has announced plans to expand the Dangote Refinery in Lagos to a jaw-dropping production capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day — a scale that would overtake India’s Jamnagar Refinery as the world’s single largest refining complex. The announcement, made during Dangote’s induction as an Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, is poised to reshape Nigeria’s energy economy and its standing as a regional fuel supplier.

The expansion is projected to create up to 95,000 skilled jobs at peak construction, with Dangote emphasising that the project will draw heavily on local engineering talent, technicians, and skilled artisans, accelerating technology transfer and deepening expertise across the broader Nigerian oil and gas value chain.

At full capacity, the refinery is expected to dramatically reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products, relieve pressure on foreign exchange reserves, and position Africa’s largest economy as a net exporter of refined fuels. The development is also forecast to stimulate ancillary activity across logistics, construction, and the wider refinery services ecosystem.

Industry observers see the expansion as a powerful signal of investor confidence and a critical step in Nigeria’s longer-term transition from Africa’s biggest fuel importer to a dominant regional supplier for West and Central African markets. Analysts, however, caution that the refinery’s transformative economic potential hinges on consistent regulatory policy, reliable infrastructure, and stable global oil market conditions.

In a related development, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, used the platform of the Nasarawa Trade Fair to call on the Dangote Group to extend its investment footprint into the state, citing untapped mineral resources and an ambitious Vision 2030 strategy targeting $100 billion in group-wide industrial investments.
