Some residents in Zaria have commended the Kaduna State Government for distributing  food and other essential materials in the area to cushion the effect of the lockdown to curtail the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the government commenced the distribution of foodstuffs worth N500 million to vulnerable people in the state.

NAN also recalls that the state government on April 4, distributed food items to support the poor and vulnerable families in Zaria as part of its palliatives.

The Chairman, Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Abdullahi Sani, who chaired the distribution, said that there are 14 clusters in Zaria and each cluster has a seven-member committee.

Mr Abubkar Usman, one of the beneficiaries at Tudun cluster, said the support came at the right time and it will reduce a lot of challenges for many households in the area.

Similarly, some beneficiaries at Kwan Gero, Bambale, Gyallesu and Tukur-Tukur/Magume clusters also expressed their appreciations to the state for the gesture.

The Chairman Distribution Task Force, Alhaji Abdullahi Sani, expressed satisfaction with the level of maturity and cooperation displayed during the distribution of the items.

NAN also reports that each cluster received 1,000 cartons of Indomie, 85 bags of 50kg of Rice and 129 cartons of four litres of vegetable oil.

Other items include 12 bags of beans, 420 bags of Semovita, and 140 cartons of spaghetti.

There were also undisclosed number of bags of Garri (Cassava flour) and sugar.

A document obtained by NAN identified the pilot councils in the distribution exercise as Chikun, Kaduna North, Kaura, Kachia, Jema’a, Sabon Gari and Zaria.

The document showed that the SUBEB chairman is in charge of the distribution in Zaria and Sabon Gari Local Government Areas.

However, some residents who are not part of the programme complained over the mode of selection of the beneficiaries and called for redress to cover all eligible residents. (NAN)
