Rex International Holding has announced a significant achievement in Benin’s oil sector as its indirect subsidiary Akrake Petroleum Benin successfully completed drilling of the AK-2H production well in the Sèmè Field. The horizontal well represents a technological breakthrough for the West African nation’s emerging petroleum industry.

A total of 1,405 meters was drilled horizontally through the reservoir section, with approximately 950 meters of oil-saturated reservoir sandstone of the Abeokuta Formation of Cretaceous age encountered. The remainder consists of non-reservoir shale, with no water-bearing sand detected. The well was geo-steered using advanced Logging While Drilling tools to ensure optimal positioning within oil-bearing reservoir sandstone.

The reservoir quality met expectations, with an average porosity exceeding 19 percent and an average oil saturation above 70 percent. The reservoir section has been completed with screens fitted with autonomous inflow control valves, which reduce water production and maximize oil output. The screens prevent sand from flowing into the well while maintaining optimal production conditions. A downhole Electrical Submersible Pump is currently being installed above the screens to enhance production efficiency. Meanwhile, work on final hookup of the mobile offshore production unit and the floating storage and offloading unit is progressing as planned. The successful completion of the AK-2H well marks an important step in Benin’s efforts to develop its offshore petroleum resources and establish itself as an oil-producing nation in the Gulf of Guinea region.
