Bayer Australia has applied to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority for approval of a new knockdown herbicide, icafolin-methyl, aimed at broadacre farming use. The application marks a significant step in the company’s push to expand its crop protection offerings for Australian growers.
The regulator’s review process will weigh the herbicide’s effectiveness, safety and environmental impact before any approval is granted. If cleared, icafolin-methyl would give farmers a new tool for managing weeds, an increasingly pressing challenge as resistance to existing herbicides continues to build across broadacre cropping regions.
Bayer says the product reflects its broader commitment to developing solutions that support the long-term productivity and sustainability of Australian agriculture. Should the application clear regulatory review, the company anticipates icafolin-methyl could reach the Australian market as early as 2028.
